What are dermal fillers?
Dermal filler injections plump up the skin and smooth fine lines on the face. Made with a hydrating hyaluronic acid-based solution, fillers restore lost volume in the following areas:
- Lips
- Cheeks
- Undereyes
- Chin
- Jawline
- Nasolabial folds
Dermal filler injections can also be personalized to help you achieve your aesthetic goals. Your Shea Aesthetics treatment plan could include filler injections that:
- Erase marionette lines
- Soften the nasolabial folds
- Plump and hydrate the lips
- Contour the jawline
- Brighten under the eyes
The Filler Process
Here’s a brief overview of the filler treatment process at Shea Aesthetic Clinic.
Comprehensive Consultation
You first meet with one of our injectors during your initial consultation. At this appointment, your injector asks you to describe the areas you’d like to enhance and accentuate with dermal fillers in Oak Ridge. This information helps your injector create a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.
Preparing for Treatment
To decrease potential bruising during your filler appointment, avoid taking blood-thinning medications (if approved by your primary care provider). Avoid alcohol intake for 5-7 days before your treatment, and avoid NSAIDs, like ibuprofen, as well.
Several supplements can increase the chance of bruising. So we recommend no supplements during the week before your appointment. Check out Stanford’s list of herbs and vitamins that increase bleeding and bruising.
It’s also important to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays before your filler injections. We recommend staying out of direct sunlight and wearing sunscreen with a minimum of 50 SPF.
Additionally, don’t skip the meal before your injection and drink plenty of water before you arrive. Sometimes being hungry, without fuel, and being behind on fluids can lead to lightheadedness during your treatment.
Injection Appointment
To begin your appointment, your injector first cleanses your treatment area and applies a numbing cream to minimize discomfort. They then use a thin needle to precisely inject small amounts of filler into your treatment areas. You’ll feel a slight sting or pinch as the needle enters your skin, but most patients find this process tolerable and comfortable.

Filler injection appointments take up to an hour to complete. The length of your appointment depends on your anatomy and how many syringes of filler are required.
Post-Care Instructions
After your injections, you may experience mild bruising and swelling for a few days. We recommend using a cold compress and over-the-counter pain medications as needed during this time. The bruising and swelling will gradually subside in the following 2-3 weeks.
If you experience bruising, we can use intense pulsed light therapy to help them resolve in half the time it usually takes for them to fade away.
Be sure to alert your provider immediately if you develop any of the following side effects:
- Pale or painful skin over or near the filler site
- Evidence of infection: Redness and tenderness
- Hives, itchiness, or rash on the face
- Numbness that lasts longer than 4-5 hours
To maintain the wonderful results you’ll receive from filler, we’ll schedule you for follow-up appointments 6 to 18 months after your treatment.
