Emsella- Non Invasive & Non Surgical treatment for Intimate health & Wellness

Your pelvic floor muscles uphold major organs, including the bowels, bladder, and uterus, which is why your pelvic floor strength matters. At Shea Aesthetic Clinic in Oak Ridge, TN, we offer a treatment that’s designed to promote pelvic floor health, and it’s called EMSELLA. This treatment can strengthen the pelvic floor muscles to treat incontinence, accelerate recovery after an injury or pregnancy, and enhance sexual health and function. Serving greater Knoxville and Oak Ridge area.

What Is EMSELLA?

EMSELLA is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment device that uses electromagnetic energy to force the pelvic floor muscles into thousands of involuntary contractions to build muscle strength in the area.

This treatment was initially designed as an incontinence treatment, and while it can effectively treat urinary incontinence, it can do much more than that. We can customize treatment plans to meet the needs of patients who need to accelerate recovery after a pelvic floor muscle injury, strengthen the pelvic floor post-pregnancy, or improve sexual function.

What Are the Treatment Benefits?

EMSELLA is an ideal solution for men and women looking for a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment that can safely strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. Some of the treatment benefits include the following:

  • Naturally treats incontinence
  • Accelerates recovery after injury or childbirth
  • Discreet and non-invasive
  • Treatments are quick at 30 minutes or less
  • Can improve sexual health in men and women
  • Can address multiple concerns at once

What Can It Treat?

We can design customized EMSELLA treatment plans to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles to help patients reach their specific goals. From treating urinary incontinence to improving sexual health and wellness and accelerating recovery after an injury or pregnancy, this device can naturally help patients improve pelvic floor health without downtime or discomfort.

A Urinary Incontinence Treatment
Urinary incontinence is a condition in which patients experience involuntary urinary leakage. There are three primary types of urinary incontinence: stress incontinence, urge incontinence, and mixed incontinence. This device can treat urinary incontinence by strengthening the pelvic floor muscles and forcing them into powerful contractions.

Studies report that 75 percent of patients who underwent treatment experienced a significant reduction in urinary leakage; of those 75 percent, 33 percent were cured of this condition. This treatment is more effective than prescription medication as it has no adverse side effects and won’t negatively affect your health.

A Post-Pregnancy Treatment
Pregnancy can weaken the pelvic floor muscles as a result of all the hormonal and physical changes that accompany those nine months of pregnancy and the childbirth process. Not only can we use EMSELLA to treat urinary incontinence, but we can also design a treatment plan to help women strengthen their pelvic floor muscles after pregnancy.

The device will treat bladder weakness and alleviate the symptoms accompanying post-natal stress incontinence. This treatment can also help women recover after pregnancy and is more effective than a Kegel exercise routine.

A Post-Injury Treatment
We can also design treatment plans with this device to help strengthen weak pelvic floor muscles or accelerate healing after an injury. Obesity, constipation, and other medical conditions can negatively impact the pelvic floor muscles and cause them to weaken or sustain an injury. Just like any other muscle in your body, your pelvic muscles can atrophy, tear, or experience muscle tension.

A customized treatment plan with EMSELLA can help alleviate the symptoms of injured or weak pelvic floor muscles, help you recover quicker, and experience all the benefits of improved muscle, strength, and tone.

A Sexual Wellness Treatment
EMSELLA can also promote sexual health and function in both men and women. It works by strengthening the pelvic floor muscles to increase blood flow to the area. For women, it can improve vaginal strength, tightness, and tone by strengthening the pelvic floor muscles and the muscles of the vaginal wall. By increasing blood flow to the pelvic floor, it can also improve vaginal hydration and treat vaginal dryness by naturally improving lubrication.

In doing so, it can alleviate pain associated with intercourse, improve the ability to orgasm, and promote overall sexual health and function. For men, this treatment can enhance the ability to achieve and maintain an erection by improving blood flow to the pelvic floor and enhancing and strengthening the muscle mass at the base of the penis.

How Does It Work?

After we complete an initial consultation to confirm that EMSELLA is right for you, we can schedule your first treatment. When you arrive at your appointment, we’ll situate you in a treatment room, and you’ll remain fully clothed as you sit on the chair-like device.

The device will then use electromagnetic energy to force the muscles in the pelvic floor to contract over 10,000 times during your treatment. When it’s over, you can resume all of your normal daily activities without any limitations.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Patients who begin a customized treatment plan will achieve the best results after completing the recommended sessions. While a single session will deliver results, most patients need a series of treatments for the most noticeable and longest-lasting results. A typical treatment plan may include six sessions scheduled bi-weekly. Each treatment takes approximately 30 minutes and won’t interrupt or interfere with your daily routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

“Stress” urinary incontinence occurs during exertion and exercise. It may happen when we laugh, jump, run, or sneeze. It is common after vaginal childbirth and often accompanies the changes of menopause. Stress urinary incontinence is due to poorly functioning, weak pelvic floor muscles. The function of these muscles is to hold the bladder in place and control the release of urine. Weakness or injury of the pelvic floor muscles is often caused by vaginal childbirth, obesity or any situation that repeatedly increases intra-abdominal pressure, such as chronic constipation, heavy lifting, and high-impact exercise.

“Urge” incontinence is characterized by a sudden compelling desire to pass urine that is difficult to ignore. The cause of this type of incontinence is often unknown but can be related to medical problems like diabetes.

“Mixed” urinary incontinence is a combination of stress and urges incontinence.

Urinary incontinence increases with:

  • Age
  • Obesity
  • Chronic constipation
  • Vaginal childbirth
  • Menopause
  • Persistent coughing
  • Some women experience a gradual increase in stress urinary incontinence over time, while others lose bladder control quite immediately after childbirth.

The EMSELLA procedure is FDA approved for men and women of any age who experience stress, urge, or mixed urinary incontinence. Since an MRI type magnet is used for the treatment, patients with metal devices, including copper intrauterine birth control devices (IUDs), artificial hip joints, and pacemakers will not be able to receive EMSELLA treatments.

Prior to receiving EMSELLA treatments, you will have a consultation with Dr. Bass or one of our Shea team member professionals to help you determine whether or not you are a candidate for EMSELLA. During this visit, we will explain the procedure in detail and address your questions and concerns. We will also provide you with our treatment protocol which addresses lifestyle modifications, exercise, and nutrition recommendations. When combined with EMSELLA, this protocol maximizes your chances of successfully stopping your urinary incontinence.

To help you be successful, we created a continence program designed to reduce and/or eliminate the causes of incontinence. Our program consists of exercise methods, behavioral modification, and the cutting-edge EMSELLA technology to assist you in reaching your goal of reestablishing continence.

Patients report feeling a tingling sensation when their pelvic muscles contract. There is no pain or discomfort and no need for sedation or anesthesia. Most patients find the procedure very tolerable and typically read, listen to music, or just take time to relax during the appointment.

On the day of the procedure, wear comfortably fitting clothes. Since an MRI type magnet is used for the treatment, don’t wear any metal jewelry or accessories. Wear clothing without metal buttons or zippers.

Once checked in, you’ll simply sit on the EMSELLA chair fully clothed. A typical treatment takes approximately 30 minutes. Because the powerful magnet can damage your cell phone, consider bringing something to read. It is okay to bring a speaker or use Bluetooth headphones if you’d like to listen to music during the procedure

One of the greatest benefits of EMSELLA treatment is that there is no downtime or time needed for recovery. You may resume normal, daily activities immediately after treatment.

To achieve optimal results, patients receive a series of 6 treatments. Two treatments are scheduled each week, for three consecutive weeks. There must be 2-3 days between each treatment session. After the initial series of 6 treatments, patients may need enhancement treatments every 1 to 6 months depending on the severity of urinary incontinence and desired results.

You may notice improvements after your first EMSELLA session, but it takes a series of at least six sessions to achieve optimal results. EMSELLA will definitely build and strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. But, just like any other muscle, the pelvic floor muscles need regular exercise to maintain their strength. The best way to maintain the improvements achieved by EMSELLA is to combine regular maintenance EMSELLA treatments with daily, at-home Kegel exercises and following our protocol for permanent change.
